Autumn in the Andes: Patagonia Photo Safari

For world travelers, Patagonia is the ultimate destination. For landscape photographers, itâs a dream come trueâ" one of the wildest, most dramatic landscapes on the planet. This two-part (Part I: April 12â"April 20, Part II: April 20â"April 27) photo adventure begins in Aysen, an area Linde calls âunknown Patagonia.â This central region of Chilean Patagonia is a land of temperate turquoise lakes, rushing crystal rivers, peaks and glaciers, and brightly colored autumn forests. We visit the Marble Caverns of Lago Carrera, the Southern Hemisphereâs answer to the slot canyons and folded sandstone of the American Southwest. We photograph wild guanacos, condors, and other exotic creatures on the grassy steppes of the vast Chacabuco Valley, which is rapidly becoming Patagoniaâs newest park.
For the second part of our photo safari, we fly south to Punta Arenas on the straits of Magellan and spend another week photographing in the Torres del Paine National Park, a spectacular collection of towering granite spires, blue glaciers, and lakes of every size and color.
Although Patagonia is wild, pristine and dramatic, we wonât be roughing it. Wonderful food, the best local accommodations, and transportation by comfortable van, are all includedâ"and fabulous Chilean wine is a welcome extra. In addition to individual instruction by Linde and Lito, participants benefit from the in-depth knowledge of one or two local guides. Instructor(s)

Linde Waidhofer , a nationally known landscape photographer, has published five books on the American West and, more recently, Patagonia. A frequent contributor to Outdoor Photographer magazine, she spends half of each year in Patagonia, living in a house she and her husband designed and built. Linde has been exploring Patagonia with her camera since her first visit in 2002, and has contributed many of her photographs to Chilean environmental groups fighting to save this pristine region from destructive development.
Linde is in love with wild places, natural light, and the hidden geometry of the world around her, which only a strong photograph can reveal. While she has embraced the digital revolution in photography with enthusiasm, she remains true to the classical spirit of âstraight photographyâ and the quest to capture great places in great light. This is Lindeâs 15th year teaching for the Workshops. Her web site is www.westerneye.com.
Lito Tejada-Flores, Lindeâs husband and partner, is a book and web-site designer, Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom expert, and all-around digital maven. He has co-taught a number of classes with Linde, including the popular âFrom the Field to the Fine Digital Printâ at the Workshops.
