Storm Chasing

From: http://www.laurieexcell.com

Storm Chasing
June, 2010 (dates TBA)

There is nothing grander, more exhilarating than weather! Join me for an intense week of photographing weather at its finest (read… nastiest) in Tornado Alley chasing tornados, super cells, lightning storms and more. We will have Brian, our own private, storm chase guide/meteorologist, with all the latest & greatest technology for finding weather at his fingertips and his expertise and passion as a storm chaser putting us in position for the best photo opportunities.

We begin and end our adventure in Oklahoma City. Where we go in between is up to Mother Nature. In 2008 we logged over 3000 miles in four states as we chased supercells along back roads and highways. In all we saw at least a dozen tornados, several lightning storms, some incredible supercells that broiled in fury above our heads and memmatis clouds that looked like popcorn scattered across the sky. Great new friendships were forged as we got to know each other over the miles. While chasing our guide will explain what he is seeing on the radar and what it may mean. He will explain where we are going and why based on the weather conditions. Our guide is in constant radio contact with other storm chasers covering a greater area through communication. During our time in transit and at mealtime we have the opportunity to cover any photographic questions and situations so that we are prepared for what the weather throws at us and can bring home outstanding images of our storm chasing adventure. I have to say that it was one of the most exciting adventures I have ever experienced.

The $2950.00 fee includes one week of storm chasing with an expert guide, transportation, lodging in various cities along the chase route and my instruction and expertise in photography.

Olympic National Park Workshop

http://paworkshops.net/olympic-national-park-workshop

Dates: July 11 - 15, 2010
Leader: Rod Barbee
Location: Port Angeles, WA
Cost: $995

About the Workshop

I live on the Olympic Peninsula. I love it here. Some of my best memories and photographs have come out of Olympic National Park. It’s one of the areas I know best. Mid-July is traditionally the best time of the year for sub-alpine wildflowers and mountain landscape images. It’s also a great time for some lowland flowers, Columbia blacktail deer (and fawns), coastal sunsets, waterfalls, and forest images as well.

Olympic National Park is one of the most diverse parks in the National Park system. From teeny, tiny tide pool critters to ancient forests to snowy mountains, Olympic has it all.

We’ll not only hit the classic places, but a few others that I know of. Places that not too many of the other workshop companies even know about. We’ll have opportunities to photograph mountains at sunrise and sunset, probably even deer in front of those very same mountains. We’ll find wildflower meadows and marmot colonies, streams, waterfalls, and rainforests. We’ll visit the coast, a flower-filled lavender farm, and maybe even a pristine subalpine lake.

We’ll visit Hurricane Ridge more than once. We’ll also explore the Sol Duc area, including Sol Duc Falls, the Lake Crescent area, the coast, and probably the Hoh rainforest. We’ll also spend one morning at a local lavender farm, always a highlight of my Olympic workshops.

Where the Shutter Clicks - December Update

Can you believe it we are getting down to the final days of this year. Wow what a year for us at UKV Photos. I am gathering thoughts and starting to make a change in our processes. All good things. Its a lull between the kids activities and that means time to try some new experiments in photography.

I'm looking to expand the wedding side of the business this year and have set those goals, based on the business plan I wrote. I am also experimenting with some new marketing strategies online as well. I will keep everyone posted on those.

One last closing thought..I am seriously thinking of creating a workshop of my own, not so much on how to photograph but giving folks a chance to photograph with others. More on that later. For now let's get on to the update.

Join us for a photo workshop not only in that grand lady of the south, Savannah, but in the Lowcountry that surrounds her. Celebrated in the book and movie "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" and founded in 1733, Savannah was laid out as a grid of squares, each surrounded by stately houses with inviting staircases, cascading plants, and beautiful flower boxes. Now numbering over 20, each square lures you in for a visit amongst magnificent, ivy-covered shade trees, wrought-iron fences, and meandering paths.

Nearby are marsh lands, ancient Live Oaks festooned in Spanish moss, a couple of forts, several lighthouses, old plantation grounds, historic cemeteries, quiet estuaries, and historic waterfront towns. For anyone loving a slice of history and the grace of the old South, you can't go wrong. You'll be able to celebrate your passion for photography, seek your own vision, hone your seeing and imaging skills, and learn about the magic of light to make wonderful photographs.
