Autumn in the Andes: Patagonia Photo Safari

Autumn in the Andes: Patagonia Photo Safari
Linde Waidhofer and Lito Tejada-Flores
April 12 - April 27, 2010

For world travelers, Patagonia is the ultimate destination. For landscape photographers, it’s a dream come trueâ€" one of the wildest, most dramatic landscapes on the planet. This two-part (Part I: April 12â€"April 20, Part II: April 20â€"April 27) photo adventure begins in Aysen, an area Linde calls “unknown Patagonia.” This central region of Chilean Patagonia is a land of temperate turquoise lakes, rushing crystal rivers, peaks and glaciers, and brightly colored autumn forests. We visit the Marble Caverns of Lago Carrera, the Southern Hemisphere’s answer to the slot canyons and folded sandstone of the American Southwest. We photograph wild guanacos, condors, and other exotic creatures on the grassy steppes of the vast Chacabuco Valley, which is rapidly becoming Patagonia’s newest park.
For the second part of our photo safari, we fly south to Punta Arenas on the straits of Magellan and spend another week photographing in the Torres del Paine National Park, a spectacular collection of towering granite spires, blue glaciers, and lakes of every size and color.
Although Patagonia is wild, pristine and dramatic, we won’t be roughing it. Wonderful food, the best local accommodations, and transportation by comfortable van, are all includedâ€"and fabulous Chilean wine is a welcome extra. In addition to individual instruction by Linde and Lito, participants benefit from the in-depth knowledge of one or two local guides. For a detailed, day-by-day itinerary of both parts and more photographs of the region, please visit www.westerneye.com.
Instructor(s)

Linde Waidhofer , a nationally known landscape photographer, has published five books on the American West and, more recently, Patagonia. A frequent contributor to Outdoor Photographer magazine, she spends half of each year in Patagonia, living in a house she and her husband designed and built. Linde has been exploring Patagonia with her camera since her first visit in 2002, and has contributed many of her photographs to Chilean environmental groups fighting to save this pristine region from destructive development.
Linde is in love with wild places, natural light, and the hidden geometry of the world around her, which only a strong photograph can reveal. While she has embraced the digital revolution in photography with enthusiasm, she remains true to the classical spirit of “straight photography” and the quest to capture great places in great light. This is Linde’s 15th year teaching for the Workshops. Her web site is www.westerneye.com.
Lito Tejada-Flores, Linde’s husband and partner, is a book and web-site designer, Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom expert, and all-around digital maven. He has co-taught a number of classes with Linde, including the popular “From the Field to the Fine Digital Print” at the Workshops.

Join Outdoor Photography Canada Magazine contributing editor, Paul Burwell, for a full-featured photography workshop in beautiful Lac Le Jeune, British Columbia. This workshop allows you to get close to Common Loons, young and old, from our floating photography stations. Depending on seasonal conditions, we hope to have the opportunity to photograph nesting loons along with loons with chicks.

We will also go on safari at various points during our time together to seek out other photography opportunities for species like Mountain Bluebirds, Hummingbirds, Woodpeckers, Flickers, Grebes and Ducks.
This workshop includes:

* Paul’s undivided attention during the photo sessions to help you get the most out of your investment
o Unlike many workshop leaders, Paul does not photograph during the sessions
o The benefit of Paul’s years of experience photographing wildlife in many different situations.
* Lodging and all meals at the Lac Le Jeune Resort and Conference Centre
o Use of the conference centre’s facilities including their numerous boats
* Small group size to a maximum of 4 participants allows for maximum flexibility
* The opportunity to learn techniques for preparing images with Photoshop, developing a managed workflow and archival strategies

This workshop will get you closer to Loons and their chicks than you ever imagined possible. Because the Loons have become so accustomed to anglers on the lakes surrounding Lac Le Jeune, they’ve grown incredibly tame. Often the problem is getting too close instead of not being able to get close enough. We’ll have access to our lodges compliment of boats and accessories from a larger pontoon boat to smaller outboard fishing and rowboats and canoes and kayaks.

When we’re not photographing Loons, we’ll head into the surrounding countryside around Lac Le Jeune to look for other wildlife photography experiences. Previous years have yielded Mountain Bluebirds, Hoary Marmots, Red-necked Grebe, Red-naped Sapsucker and Northern Flicker, all within a 30 minute drive of our lodge.
About the leader

I was the President of an Internet services company for over 10 years where I developed an extensive history of working with and educating adults. I am currently a contributing editor for Outdoor Photography Canada magazine and a professional nature photographer. Some individuals seem to run workshops in order to subsidize their own photography shoots. But, unlike those workshop leaders, I am exclusively there to help you get the best shots. You won’t need to worry about interrupting my photography to ask a question or get advice. This workshop is more than just a series of photo sessions. It is a full featured workshop offering a complete educational experience.

Cusco and Machu Picchu: The People, Culture, and Land

http://www.santafeworkshops.com/workshops/calendar-detail.php?workshop=488&all=1

Cusco and Machu Picchu: The People, Culture, and Land
Bruce Barnbaum and Adam L. Weintraub
April 8 - April 15, 2010

This workshop will be a blockbuster. Bruce Barnbaum leads a fabulous excursion into the city of Cusco, Peru with special time dedicated to the incredible Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. The focus of the workshop will be creative seeing and thinking about an area that is remote, yet frequently visited and photographed.  We’ll explore some unique sites not often visited by the larger groups, allowing you the chance to respond from your own intuitions.  We will be reviewing our images throughout this entire trip.

We’ll jump off the Orient Express for a relatively smooth day hike up to the Puerta del Sol â€" the famous entry  point to Machu Picchu â€" with a stop at the spectacularly situated site of Wiñay Wayna. The next morning, rise & shine early for the first entry to the ruins and on your own for the first few hours. After a quick formal tour you’ll be on your own again to either take an alternative hike around the ruins or head down to the village for some hot springs.

In this first-ever extension to Lake Titicaca (April 15-20; additional fees apply, see Tuition details below), we take some time at this very unique terrain with incredible vistas, unique geological formations and the lake culture unique to this zone: the Chulpas de Sillustani; the colorful colonial town Lampa and stunning stone cathedral with a replica of the La Pietá; the Tinajani “stone forest”.  In the north-eastern region of Lake Titicaca lies the island Suasi, a private 43-hectare island where everything is different: dawn, rain, storms, twilight.  A solar-powered ecolodgeâ€"the only private island. Featuring panoramic lake views from every room, Suasi is a magical, mystical place to disconnect from the world. Spot rare vicuñas, contemplate colorful high-altitude sunsets, a candlelit gourmet restaurant, bar and game room, the lodge is the perfect place to relax after a day of high-altitude photography.
Instructor(s)

Bruce Barnbaum entered photography as a hobbyist in the 1960s and has taught workshops since 1972. His classic book in four movements, Visual Symphony, was published in 1986 by Alfred van der Marck Editions. Other books include The Art of Photography, An Approach to Personal Expression, Tone Poems -- Book 1, Book 2.  He is a frequent contributor to Photo Techniques and LensWork, among others.  Bruce is also recognized as one of the finest darkroom printers on this planet, both through his exceptional black-and-white work, and also through his color imagery. His work is represented by more than ten galleries throughout the United States and Canada, and is in the collections of museums and private collectors worldwide. Bruce's web site is www.barnbaum.com.
Adam L. Weintraub is a photographer based in Seattle. His Photoexperience.net workshops combine inspiring artists which offer insight and collaboration in an intimate setting. Removed from Cusco's tourist section, his B&B plays host to the class, overlooking the Cusco valley. He is currently coordinating efforts to create a permanent archive and catalogue of the famed Peruvian photographer, Martin Chambi. Adam is a past President of Blue Earth Alliance and is widely published, collected, hired and admired for his personal work
Tuition & Fees:

Includes all instruction & materials, lodging, first & last dinners, all breakfasts & lunches, entrance fees and transfers within Peru. The initial flight to Cusco is not included. $350.00 deposit accepted any time prior to hold space in workshop with final balance due 60 days prior to commencement (February 8th, 2010). $450 charge for single room supplement. $950 covers the Lake Titicaca extension.

August in Maine, where the Atlantic meets the coast, is delightful. With sunny and foggy days, you'll see the various moods of this craggy area that Margo and Arnie love to photograph. "Down East" Maine is an area known for its dramatic rocky coast, pounding surf, wonderful lighthouses, and charming fishing harbors and coves dotted with lobster boats. And we mustn't forget the famous Maine fir trees that add wonderful elements to the coastline. Margo and Arnie will take you to areas where Winslow Homer, Andy Wyeth, and other artists have painted for centuries.

Because this is a popular time of year, we have scheduled this workshop Monday through Thursday. We will be headquarted at a lovely inn in New Harbor with beautiful rooms, a spa, and an impressive wine list, so you may want to bring your spouse or significant other, who are always welcome at our workshops and instantly become part of our group.

As noted in the spring Maine workshops, the Barefoot Contessa grew up sailing this area, so knows it well and looks forward to introducing you to her special haunts where you'll be able to celebrate your passion for photography, hone your seeing and imaging skills, and learn about the magic of light to make wonderful photographs.

New Harbor is in the heart of an area that has produced many of Margo's photographs that have been published in calendars, travel magazines, and coffee-table books. After the workshop, plan on taking an extra few days to explore this area on your own, return to places we have taken you, and use your new-found knowledge to make more beautiful photographs.
