Cusco and Machu Picchu: The People, Culture, and Land
Bruce Barnbaum and Adam L. Weintraub
April 8 - April 15, 2010
This workshop will be a blockbuster. Bruce Barnbaum leads a fabulous excursion into the city of Cusco, Peru with special time dedicated to the incredible Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. The focus of the workshop will be creative seeing and thinking about an area that is remote, yet frequently visited and photographed. Weâll explore some unique sites not often visited by the larger groups, allowing you the chance to respond from your own intuitions. We will be reviewing our images throughout this entire trip.
Weâll jump off the Orient Express for a relatively smooth day hike up to the Puerta del Sol â" the famous entry point to Machu Picchu â" with a stop at the spectacularly situated site of Wiñay Wayna. The next morning, rise & shine early for the first entry to the ruins and on your own for the first few hours. After a quick formal tour youâll be on your own again to either take an alternative hike around the ruins or head down to the village for some hot springs.
In this first-ever extension to Lake Titicaca (April 15-20; additional fees apply, see Tuition details below), we take some time at this very unique terrain with incredible vistas, unique geological formations and the lake culture unique to this zone: the Chulpas de Sillustani; the colorful colonial town Lampa and stunning stone cathedral with a replica of the La Pietá; the Tinajani âstone forestâ. In the north-eastern region of Lake Titicaca lies the island Suasi, a private 43-hectare island where everything is different: dawn, rain, storms, twilight. A solar-powered ecolodgeâ"the only private island. Featuring panoramic lake views from every room, Suasi is a magical, mystical place to disconnect from the world. Spot rare vicuñas, contemplate colorful high-altitude sunsets, a candlelit gourmet restaurant, bar and game room, the lodge is the perfect place to relax after a day of high-altitude photography.
