I have to admit the Golden Spiral is a new compisitional tool to me, one I like but I am still new at it. As with the rule of thirds you are looking for a point of interest. In the golden spiral you tend to have something in the image than is leading your eyes toward the center. In this rule though you tend to use a curve or objects that lead the eye along a curve. You can also go over to wikipedia and look it up. When you do though bring your calculator or slide rule. The explanation to be found on wikipedia is overly mathematical. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_spiral
The strength of the composition lies in a recurring pattern in nature. I chose the shell image above on purpose. I looked throgh my library of images and was not able to locate one that really worked with this rule. In my research I located a few that did though.
